Cathy Pinkerton (formerly Dehlin) joined the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel in March 2013. She provides legal advice and counsel to the divisions of student affairs/life and academic units on all three campuses on matters relating to students, including: academic, non-academic, and professional misconduct; disability accommodations; student organizations; FERPA; crisis management planning and critical incident response; investigations; and policy development and implementation.
Previously, Cathy served as General Counsel at Northern Michigan University (2006-2013) and as NMU’s EO Officer/Title IX coordinator (2005-2007); partner in the Labor and Employment practice group of Quarles & Brady LLP in Phoenix, Arizona (1999-2005); partner and associate in the Litigation practice group at Hogan & Hartson LLP (now Hogan Lovells) in Washington, D.C. (1990-1999); and law clerk to the Honorable James A. Belson on the D.C. Court of Appeals (1989-1990).
Cathy received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1988 and her B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1984. She is an active member of the Michigan and D.C. bars, and is currently inactive in the Virginia bar.
