Q: What is the Freedom of Information Act?

A: The Michigan FOIA was enacted by the Michigan Legislature in 1976. The law declares that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees.

Q: What should I do if I receive a FOIA request for documents?

A: If you receive a request for documents, regardless of whether the request specifically cites FOIA, you should immediately contact the FOIA Office at (734) 763-5082. Do not delay in contacting the FOIA office after receiving a request for documents. The U-M has only five (5) days to respond to a request so it is important to notify the FOIA Office immediately. Do not begin searching for or copying documents before talking to the FOIA Office.
