Tom Kent joined the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel in Fall 2017.  His primary responsibilities include:  representing U-M in contract and tort litigation in state and federal courts; providing advice and counsel on labor, employment, law enforcement, and immigration matters; providing counsel to U-M colleges, schools, departments, and units on the use of Telecommuting Agreements; working with the U-M Department of Public Safety and Security on law enforcement matters, investigations, responses to subpoenas and critical Human Resources incidents, and potential or pending litigation; providing ongoing counsel to Michigan Medicine Human Resources on a variety of non-union staff employment and policy-related matters; and serving on and chairing the U-M Faculty and Staff Immigration Advisory Counsel.

Prior to his arrival at the University, Tom served as Senior Assistant City Attorney for the City of Ann Arbor for three years and Deputy Chief Legal Officer for the City of Flint for five years.  From 1996 through 2009, Tom was in private practice in Ann Arbor specializing in employment and civil rights litigation.  Throughout his career, Tom has specialized in private and public sector labor, employment, and constitutional tort litigation.
