The attorneys in this practice area provide legal services to Michigan Medicine, one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers, which includes a top-tier medical school and nursing school, three hospitals, five specialty health centers and forty outpatient health centers, more than 120 clinics, and one of the largest accountable care organizations (“ACOs”) in the country.

The attorneys provide legal counsel to its Michigan Medicine constituents—including health care providers, administrators, and other medical personnel—in subject areas germane to health care services, scientific research and discovery, business and strategic affiliations, and medical education. The attorneys work compassionately with health care providers, patients, and their families to help resolve operational and medico-legal challenges swiftly and responsibly. The attorneys work strategically with clinicians, members of the business team, and administrators to achieve outcomes that are financially sound, clinically appropriate, and consistent with Michigan Medicine’s mission and goals. The attorneys work diligently with U-M faculty to navigate legal issues related to graduate medical education and research, and to provide support through the litigation process. The attorneys advise on a broad array of health issues, from medical staff issues to physician contracts; from managed care to strategic affiliations; from research and sponsored projects to fraud and abuse; from health care reimbursement to Medicare regulations and health care reform; from patient safety and medical malpractice to HIPAA, EMTALA, HITECH, and more.

The attorneys in this practice area are on call 24/7 to answer emergent patient-related questions regarding, for example, informed consent, treatment of minors, involuntary commitment, blood transfusions, end of life matters, etc. Additionally, the attorneys speak publicly, both within Michigan Medicine and outside to the public at large, educating on a variety of health law and health-related topics.
